Orcas (Killer Whales) Viewed
Off Newport Beach
Dec/Jan 2012
Story
provided by Davey's
Locker
Killer
whales are viewed infrequently in southern California
waters with the most southern resident pod making
Monterey their home much of the year. December
and January 2012 has seen a huge number of killer
whale sightings with sometimes dozens spotted
during the single cruise. Whale watchers from
Davey's Locker Whale Watching and Newport Landing
Whale Watching witnessed killer whales breaching
completely out of the water, coming right underneath
the whale watching ship, and even feeding. For
whatever reason, the most southern resident pod
of killer whales that normally makes Monterey
their home have been frequently Newport Beach
waters. Additionally a larger number of killer
whales from an offshore pod that usually travels
the open ocean have also decided to spend sometime
in the waters off Newport Beach resulting in large
influx of killer whales sighted.
With
blue whales, finback whales, gray whales, minke
whales, humpback whales, killer whales, and many
species of dolphin, Newport Beach has become one
of the top whale watching destinations in the
world it is hard to believe such a thriving ecosystem
is right here in the heart of southern California.
