Techniques in Spider and Varicose Vein Treatment
(Information provided by
Maraya Altuwaijri, M.D.)
What
are spider veins?
Spider veins, also known as telengiectasia are
dilated blood vessels near the surface of the
skin. They are most commonly found on your legs.
The veins look like threads or webs, varying
in size and may be red, purple or bluish.
What
are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are swollen blood vessels that
are deeper than spider veins. They may be bulging,
ropy and blue in appearance.
How
are spider veins and varicose veins treated?
There are a number of different treatment options
for spider veins and varicose veins including
sclerotherapy.
What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is the most common treatment for
spider veins and smaller varicose veins. In
sclerotherapy, a foam solution is injected with
a tiny needle into the vein. This makes them
collapse and, with time, resolve.
Which
veins can be treated with sclerotherapy?
Any spider veins or varicose veins can potentially
be treated with sclerotherapy.
Is
any preparation necessary before sclerotherapy
treatment?
You do not need any special preparations. Continue
on your usual diet. Please discuss any prescription
or over the counter medications you take with
your physician prior to the treatment.
What
happens during a sclerotherapy treatment?
Sclerotherapy is an outpatient treatment, no
anesthesia is necessary.
You
will either change into a gown or be asked to
bring shorts that you may wear during the treatment
session. Normally, you will be laying on an
exam table, then using a tiny needle as thin
as a hair, a solution will be injected into
the veins that need to be treated.
Most
people do not complain of significant pain during
the procedure. The areas that are treated may
look like little mosquito bites. Once the treatment
is complete, compression stockings are applied.
You can drive yourself home.
How
soon will the vessels disappear?
Immediately during the treatment, the process
of destroying veins begins. However, each person's
results may vary. It may take up to two months
for the veins to disappear.
What
should you do after treatment?
You will wear compression stockings for two
weeks.Hot tubs or hot baths should be avoided
during those two weeks. You can return to your
normal daily life activities after sclerotherapy.
